Learning Support

A Commitment to Every Student’s Success

At Lycée International de Houston (LIH), we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to thrive academically and personally. Our Learning Support Program is designed to provide individualized assistance, ensuring that all students have the tools they need to succeed in a rigorous, multilingual, and internationally focused environment.

The Lycée International de Houston is committed to providing support that enables students to achieve greater academic success. This assistance is available through study hall, academic tutoring, and language support in French or English for non-native speakers. Our structured Study Hall Program, part of our Learning Support services, allows students to complete homework, study for tests, and receive academic guidance during school hours. A French or English teacher provides tutoring, helps organize assignments, and ensures students use this time effectively—reducing the workload at home while offering additional assistance when needed.

LIH is an inclusive school that supports students with a wide range of learning differences and individual needs, including those with specific learning difficulties, as well as highly achieving or gifted and talented students who require additional challenges and enrichment. Our experience, breadth of programs, and commitment to knowing each child well ensure that we can effectively challenge and support all learners.

Personalized Academic Support

Our Learning Support Program offers tailored interventions for students who may require additional academic guidance. Whether a student needs targeted support in specific subjects, assistance with language acquisition, or help developing executive functioning skills, our dedicated team works closely with teachers and families to create a personalized learning plan that fosters growth and independence.

Multidisciplinary Approach

Our support framework includes:

  • One-on-one and small group tutoring sessions
  • Language acquisition support for multilingual learners
  • Collaboration with teachers to provide differentiated instruction
  • Social-emotional learning support to help students develop confidence and resilience
  • Access to specialized learning resources to enhance skill development
  • Gifted and Talented support for students who require enrichment and accelerated learning opportunities

Preparation Language Programs ESL (English as a Second Language) Support

For students arriving with little to no English proficiency, LIH provides ESL (English as a Second Language) support to help them develop the language skills necessary to integrate successfully into the classroom. Our structured ESL program ensures that students receive personalized assistance, enabling them to build confidence and fluency in English while keeping up with their academic progress.

Non-French-speaking and non-English-speaking students are welcome, thanks to specialized Lycée International de Houston program offerings:

  • In Maternelle/Preschool, no prior French or English skills are necessary.
  • In Grades 1st to 8th, non-French-speaking students receive intensive French language enrichment (FLE) in small, language-focused classes to prepare them for a multilingual classroom.
  • Non-English-speaking Francophone students can enroll in all grades and will receive intensive English language enrichment (IEP) to help them integrate into bilingual instruction.
  • In High School, students can choose between an English-based IB Program and a French-based Bac Program.

Supporting Gifted and Talented Students

The Lycée International de Houston recognizes the unique needs of gifted and talented students and is committed to ensuring they are challenged and supported within the daily academic program. Our team collaborates closely with students and parents to provide advanced learning opportunities, ensuring these students remain engaged, motivated, and excelling in their areas of strength.

Partnering with Families

We recognize that parent involvement is key to a child’s success. Our Learning Support team works closely with families, offering regular updates, progress assessments, and resources to support students both in and outside the classroom. We believe in a collaborative approach, ensuring that students receive consistent support from school and home.

General Considerations for Learning Support

A student may require additional support if their academic progress is affected by any of the following:

  • Specific learning difficulties (e.g., dyslexia)
  • General learning challenges (e.g., attention or comprehension difficulties)
  • Social or emotional difficulties impacting academic performance
  • Underachievement compared to peers
  • Multiple school transitions, leading to gaps in education
  • Students who have been retained during the current school year

Empowering Students for the Future

Our goal is to equip every student with the skills, strategies, and confidence to overcome challenges and excel in their academic journey. At LIH, we are committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment where all students can reach their full potential.
